How to Design the Perfect Awning for Your Business

To design the perfect awning for our clients, we start by answering these ten essential questions:

1. What Size Will It Be?

Size is one of the most critical aspects of awning design. Always ensure your design canvas is at a true-to-scale size. This way, you can accurately visualize key elements like your logo, business name, and other graphics.

2. Are You Using the Correct Measurement System?

For our U.S.-based clients, we use the Imperial measurement system (inches and feet).
If you're located in Europe or use the metric system, make sure to convert your dimensions accurately before starting your design.

3. What Shape Is Your Awning?

There are dozens of awning shapes available — traditional signband, waterfall, dome, convex, and more. A good designer should understand all available options and be able to advise which shape works best for the customer’s specific situation.

Example: If your awning is L-shaped, make sure your business name is visible from both sides so people can see it from different angles.

Visit our "Frames" category to explore the awning shapes we offer.

4. Do You Have Vector Graphics?

Many clients send us raster files (like JPEGs), which lose quality when resized. To ensure sharp, professional results, we convert these into vector graphics, which scale without losing resolution.

5. What Is the Color Scheme?

Color defines the overall look and feel of your awning. Choose your fabric color carefully, and ensure your text and graphics have high contrast for maximum readability.
Keep in mind: lighter colors tend to show dirt more easily and may appear darker over time. Darker colors are more tend to fade over time

6. What Should the Lettering Say?

Start by identifying your business type and the main phrase that needs to stand out (e.g. PIZZA, DELI GROCERY, LAUNDROMAT, etc).
This will be your primary message, located on the front.
Then define secondary content (e.g. phone number, services, address), which typically appears on the sides or signband.

7. Any Add-Ons or Decorative Details?

Does your awning include a valance, decorative trim, or special features? Be sure to include these in your design so the customer has a clear, complete preview.

8. Client Approval Sheet

The approval sheet helps clients visualize their awning from every angle.
We typically provide:

  • A building façade mockup with realistic perspective

  • A flat technical layout showing all dimensions and element placements

If we don’t have a good photo of the building façade, we can create a vector model on a white background

9. Keep It Minimal

Modern design leans toward minimalism and clarity. Avoid cluttering your awning with too many graphics or text. Prioritize legibility and clean contrast — don’t turn it into a “Christmas tree.”

10. No Blind Copy-Pasting

Even if the client sends specific content to include on the awning, don’t just copy and paste. Take time to understand their business, refine the wording if needed, and make sure the final message is clear and effective.
